Patient Safety Analyst Registered Nurse

JOB SUMMARY

The Patient Safety Analyst is responsible for developing and executing patient safety improvement strategies, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to assess current processes, identifying potential opportunities for error, and recommending evidence-based interventions. The Patient Safety Analyst will collaborate with leaders to investigate and document the analysis of patient safety events and improve care quality. The Patient Safety Analyst will apply and reinforce the principles of a high-reliability organization (HRO) and continuous improvement methodologies to lead change. The Patient Safety Analyst will also collaborate with the organization safety team and the Patient Safety Organization to conduct common cause analysis, provide comparative analysis, and identify system-wide patient safety improvement efforts specific to the opportunities identified.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Required)
  • Master's Degree in Nursing (Preferred)

EXPERIENCE

  • 1 or more years of Clinical Nursing Experience (Required)

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

  • Registered Nurse with current Georgia license (Required)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

CONSULTANT TO STAFF

  • Educates and consults staff on patient safety issues.
  • Communicates patient safety program elements to the medical staff, clinical staff, and executive staff.
  • Educates physicians and staff on patient safety, including but not limited to, appropriate procedures that serve to avoid, minimize or provide stop gap for identified risks to patient safety.
  • Acts as a consultant to physicians and staff related to policy and procedure development.
  • Participates in meeting regulatory compliance conditions of participation for the Office of Regulatory Services and GHA/Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA).
  • Actively participates/engaged in the Patient Safety Committee to drive initiatives related to creating a blame-resistant culture for medical error reporting, proactive risk assessment, and interdisciplinary integration of patient safety practices.
  • Assists in the development of data collection tools and manages data collection related to these tools for patient safety projects for PPHS.

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

  • Analyzes safety events.
  • Coordinates and tracks serious safety event root cause analysis throughout PPHS.
  • Coordinates project integration with Quality Improvement, Pharmacy, and Risk Management to ensure timely completion of reports, identifying data sources and collection of data for established patient safety quality measures, assisting with data analysis, documenting and tracking data specifications, and facilitating meetings.
  • Collaborates with the Medication Safety Team, which coordinates medication safety initiatives and identifies and acts on opportunities for improvement.
  • Performs rounds to assess frontline compliance with patient safety standards, staff and physician attitudes, and provides guidance to patient care areas related to patient safety practices.

DATA COLLECTION - SAFETY

  • Collects data from various sources to ensure patient safety.
  • Assists in designing data for PPHS and external audiences.
  • Gathers data from internal and external data sources to establish benchmarks and gathers information on lessons learned from patient safety initiatives throughout the country that can be applied to PPHS.
  • Participates and represents PPHS's patient safety program in a variety of internal and external meetings.

DOCUMENTATION

  • Documents and submits required information and data in a timely fashion.
  • Clearly and accurately documents designated processes, policies, products, service offerings, etc.
  • Ensures that documentation is tailored to expected readers/users.
  • Uses correct terminology.
  • Conforms to required style and format.

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT USE

  • Demonstrates technical skill in using equipment appropriate for the role.
  • Understands equipment operation.
  • Maintains equipment in working order. Troubleshoots equipment problems.
  • Uses technology to increase productivity. Adapts to new technology.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility to include any specialty certification requirements (i.e., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
  • Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs. For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age-specific customer service skills.
  • Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.
