What You’ll Do
As an Operating Room Technician (ORT), you will:
- Prepare the operating room and assist with surgical procedures under the supervision of Registered Nurses and Physicians.
- Set up and maintain sterile fields and ensure all required instruments and supplies are available.
- Assist the surgical team by anticipating needs, passing instruments, and supporting operative workflow.
- Document required information related to procedures, equipment use, and patient interactions.
- Utilize surgical equipment and technology to ensure safe and effective operations.
Qualifications
Education
- Vocational/Technical Degree from an Accredited Surgical Technology Program (Required)
Work Experience
- Surgical technologist or OR technician experience (Preferred)
Required Certifications/Licensure
- CST – Certified Surgical Technologist (Required)
- BCLS – Basic Life Support (Required)
Essential Functions
Outcomes & Evaluations
- Ensures readiness of OR suites to support quality surgical outcomes.
- Collaborates with the surgical team to evaluate needed supplies, equipment, and setup.
- Adjusts instrumentation, equipment, or setup based on changes in patient or procedural needs.
- Documents relevant details that support evaluation of surgical processes and outcomes.
Care Processes
- Treats patients and families with compassion while supporting perioperative care.
- Bases all decisions on established surgical protocols and plan of care.
- Monitors and documents patient response when applicable to the technician role.
- Establishes rapport and adapts communication to meet patient and team needs.
- Recognizes age-specific considerations during surgical preparation and support.
- Ensures confidentiality, privacy, and respect for every patient.
- Assists with managing stressful, urgent, or complex surgical situations.
Assessment & Preparation
- Collects and organizes supplies, instruments, and equipment systematically.
- Identifies and addresses equipment or instrument issues prior to procedures.
- Prioritizes tasks based on case complexity and surgical schedule.
- Assists with identifying expected outcomes for setup, sterilization, and procedural readiness.
Care Planning & Implementation
- Develops a safe and efficient plan for surgical setup.
- Ensures continuity through communication with team members pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedure.
- Implements sterile technique and procedural preparation in a timely manner.
- Documents all instrument, equipment, and case‑related actions per policy.
- Consults with nursing and surgical staff regarding equipment needs or concerns.
- Utilizes appropriate hospital systems and resources to support operative care.
Documentation
- Documents and submits required information accurately and on time.
- Uses correct terminology and follows required style and formatting.
- Ensures documentation is clear, complete, and tailored to appropriate readers.
Technology & Equipment Use
- Demonstrates technical skill in using surgical and sterilization equipment.
- Understands the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the OR.
- Troubleshoots equipment problems and notifies appropriate personnel.
- Adapts to new technologies and uses them to increase efficiency.
Additional Duties
- Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines.
- Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission and vision of the organization.
- Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs).
- Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
- Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs.
- For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age-specific customer service skills.
- Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.
